A big hole was letting rain in, so I rang McNulty & Sons for a quote. While polite & professional on the phone, agreeing to visit my property the very next day, my experience only went downhill from here. Next day came and went with no sign of McNulty & Sons. No phone call, no text message to explain why he missed my appointment, nothing. I rearranged the visit and finally, four days after initially promising he’d visit, I did finally receive a quote for the work. Why did I persist with McNulty & Sons rather than using another company when they let me down? 1. I’d used McNulty and Sons before, to replace a roof on another property. On that occasion they also missed the first TWO appointments and started work TWO WEEKS later than initially agreed; They also “forgot” to do part of the work (so they had to come back later & finish the job I’d paid for). Despite all of those problems, McNulty’s work was of good quality, certainly of better quality than any of the other five Darlington roofers I’d used previously on other properties, also their work was reasonably priced compared to the competition, so even with their lousy time keeping and lack of attention to detail, they were the best available. 2. A hole was letting water in to a bedroom and damaging the ceiling and carpet every time it rained and they promised a fast fix. From past experience McNulty did always do a fast, good patch-up job. 3. McNulty & Sons give a 25 year warranty, which not many companies offer. 4. Darlington has real problems with decent trades people and of the five Darlington roofers I tried for an urgent fix, McNulty & Sons were the most professional! After accepting the quote And agreeing a date, McNulty & Sons just didn’t bother showing up. I wasted an entire day waiting on them and didn’t even get a call the explain. When I called them that evening asking what happened I was told, “ I’ve been tied up on a job all day. I’ll visit tomorrow around 10am”. Next day, same again: waited all day, no sign of McNulty & Sons. Rang McNulty & Sons again, no answer. Rang from a different number - answered first time! I was AGAIN told they’d, “been extremely busy” and, “would be there tomorrow, 100% guaranteed”. Next day: McNulty & Sons = No Show! I was ignored again when I phoned & texted; used my daughter's phone to call, they answered immediately! Yet again I was promised FAITHFULLY they’d turn up the very next day. Unsurprisingly, they didn’t show up! At this point I’d rearranged with the OWNER of McNulty & Sons FIVE times. EVERY single time I was let down. What I find most annoying is his lack of respect for his customers: the OWNER of McNulty & Sons could not be bothered to text, email or phone and tell me they wouldn’t be there; every time, McNulty & Sons failed show-up I lost a day’s work (I’m self employed) and he thought NOTHING of wasting my days and disrupting my business in the process. What irks me is the “25 year warranty” McNulty & Sons give, but don’t honour. based on evidence I’ve seen anyway. Example: I contacted McNulty and Sons to fix a leaking down pipe they installed at another property; so far they’ve failed to respond to EVERY one of the 18 requests for assistance!! Worse still, it’s a problem that THEY caused when replacing some flashing (which was supposed to have been done as part of another job they did). I accept roofing work can be weather dependent. I also know that people are, sometimes. unexpectedly delayed, but repeated, deliberate, thoughtless and plain rude behaviour from a company owner, who I’ve paid THOUSANDS of pounds to, that’s not acceptable. Once unpaid I was forgotten; repeatedly lied to; fobbed off with excuses… It’s no way to run business. I DO NOT recommend McNulty & Sons. WHEN they turn up, their work is acceptable, but their after sales support and 25 year warranty don’t exist!

Despite the original quote being more expensive than we’d expected we decided to go ahead and arranged for the work to be done on their suggested schedule one month later. The date was confirmed by them. On the day of the job no one turned up and our messages to find out where they were were ignored. We have not heard from them since. Would not recommend this business.
